Theme not updating and breaking website

Hiya
I’m trying to update the theme 4.4.0 without success. The first time it just hung, I had to remove the .maintenance file to get the website back and the update was not applied. The second time the same thing happened except this time it also caused the white screen of death. On closer inspection none of the virtue premium files were not in the directory so I had to manually upload latest version of theme to get website back. OK I thought maybe just a glitch and tried with another website… Same thing! Although I’ve only tried to update the theme once, so only needed to delete .maintenance file and website came back but still needs the update. Is this is know bug? How can I fix this please?
