Showing images in a row

Hi

I want to add images to my page at the top as links to other child pages as shown in the first image below. I can do this using a table but that is not the way to go as this gives problems when resizing to mobile and I cant get rid of the black lines even though they show white in the admin. When I use the built in gallery the images are too big and it gives a weird fade and the labels are not clear.

Surely there must be a way to do this?
