Removing API Key to work on site revamp

I have a client that wants to revamp their site (Virtue Premium)
I want to do the setup on another server/domain and then transfer it/replace the current site when it’s ready.
Can I use the API key on the site that’s being revamped?
Will the existing site fall to pieces if I remove the API Key?
