How to add Javascript in header?

Hi!
I added a Javascript using a plugin called “insert header and Footer”. Now the plugin has messed up my site (the news blog disappeared) so I had to Inactivate the plugin. I placed the Javascript in the header. How do I insert the script, I have been searching the forum but I can’t find any clear solution. Do I have to add a child theme?
