Change Home Icon Menu Hover

Hi Ben,
This is tough to describe, and a link won’t help as I’ve not been able to solve it myself. I am hoping you can help.
Background is white and I’d like to keep the menu box white, so that it doesn’t show – only the icon and font show. Menu and Icon font colour is green. I would like to hover so that only the icon and text are highlighted in the hover, not the box. Really, I just don’t want the box showing up at all – either when still or on hover. Is there a quick fix to change this. Does this make sense?
Also, is there a way to change the shape of the boxes? Change them to circles possibly?
