Custom blog summary – per category

Hi Team,
By default, my blog summaries are text only – at client request. I have a number of posts that have multiple categories.
On one category summary page (and maybe others in the future!), I want to change the summary appearance to include the featured image.
So – a post categorised as both “news” and “chat” will show as text only on the “news” archive, but on the “chat” archive, the summary will include the featured image.
I am using a child theme and realise I will probably need to add a “select function” into functions.php and define a new template file for the category.
Please can you help with the details?
