PayPal Express – I can't checkout using PayPal Express if the cart is empty.

Hello,
If I select a product to purchase immediately using PayPal Express on the product page, I cannot go straight to PayPal checkout page if the cart has 0 items inside. This is because when I try to checkout an error code shows up on cart saying “your order amount is zero, We were unable to process your order, please try again.”
But if my cart has 1 or more items in it. I can then choose another item in my shop using PayPal Express and then it will redirect to the paypal page.
So basically, paypal express will only work if there is already an item in the cart. But won’t if the cart is empty which defeats the purpose.
In a nutshell, how can I select an item and then immediately checkout without having to add to cart using payPal express?
